San Marino, June 01, 2017 – Warm atmosphere in the afternoon of the third day in these XVII Games of small states of Europe, with medals and titles assigned in four disciplines.
BEACH VOLLEY – The women’s tournament continues under Titan’s sun, with the clear victory of Monaco’s Muratore / Revel Chion couple on Caruana / Zarb for 2-0 (21-5, 21-10). Same result for Cypriot Angelopoulou / Konstantinou on Luxembourg’s Grethen / Klerf, 2-0 with partial 21-11, 21-8. In spite of the result of 2-0, tought fight between Liechtenstein and Monaco, won by the alpine pair with a double 21-16. BASKET – In the women’s tournament, Malta won the third consecutive victory, securing the gold medal. Against Luxembourg, a suffered victory for girls in red, who remained below for three quarters of game, paying mostly a disastrous second quarter (4-20 the partial). Again under 40-32 at 10 minutes from the end, Malta shaked itself and marked a partial of 20-10, catching the title with the slightest margin: 52-50 the final result. Also important is the success of Iceland on Cyprus, 63-47 for Viking girls. After three-quarters of balance, Sara Run Hinriksdottir led her teammates to the success, with a final partial of 26-11. Among men, the second win of the Andorra national team, which took the lead on Iceland for 83-81.
VOLLEY – Nice win for Monaco, in men’s tournament, against Iceland, after losing the first set 25-22. The white-n-reds are shaken from the second set, and they put three partial without replies (25-21, 25-16, 25-15) for a final result of 3-1. Suffered victory for Luxembourg on Cyprus, beat only in the fifth set, with the partial of 25-18, 25-22, 21-25, 16-25, 23-25. Icelandic victory, however, among the girls: Malta’s down for 3-0, with partial 25-20, 25-22, 25-20. TENNIS – Cypriot Georgiana Raluca Serban and Luxembourg’s Eleonora Molinaro will be playing the gold medal in the singular female tournament. The two Maltese players Elaine Genovese (6-1, 6-1 by Serban) and Francesca Curmi (6-4, 6-3 by Molinaro) were beaten. The bronze medal will be awarded only in this tournament through a meeting between the two losing semi-finalists: there will be a Maltese derby with the least secure island of the medal. In the men’s singles tournament, the final will be between Florent Diep (6-4, 6-4 in Cypriot Eleftherios Neos), and Luxembourg Ugo Nastasi (6-4, 7-6 at the other Monagasque, Lucas Catarina). Georgiana Raluca Serban is still in the lead with Eleftherios Neos, in the semi-final of the double mixed tournament: 6-4, 6-4 for Sammarinese players Gioia Barbieri and Marco De Rossi, who will have to settle for the bronze medal. Bronze also for the Maltese Genovese and Asciak, defeated at tie break by the pair of Luxembourg Molinaro / Nastasi. Particulars: 6-1, 1-6, 8-10. Cyprus and Luxembourg, therefore, for the double medal of these Games.
TABLE TENNIS – Bronze medal for San Marino, thanks to the couple Vanucci / Ragni, in the double men’s tournament. The Sammarinesians are defeated in the semi-final for 3-0 by the Luxembourg pair Ciociu / Olteanu, who will play the gold medal against Montenegrins Bakic / Radovic, winning the fifth set against the Provost / Gemignani monegasques. SHOOTING – The women’s 10-meter rifle final saw a beautiful duel between Carole Calmes (Luxembourg) and Marilena Constantinou (Cyprus). It was the girl of the Grand Duchy to get the gold medal, while the bronze was finished by the Montenegrin neck Andela Milickovic.
