Swimming is the motor activity that allows the flotation and the body motion in water. Swimming involves almost all the muscles of the body. It is not only an Olympic sport, but als a recreational activity. The history of swimming finds its origins back to ancient times, over 7000 years ago, as evidenced by the discovery of cave paintings representing men in the act of swimming dated back to the Stone Age. Ultra ancient water sport, it is inserted into the Olympic program since the Games of the I Olympiad. Swimming can be practiced at a competitive level, it involves in fact many sacrifices for those who practice at this level.
Considered a complete and healthy sport, which distributes the movement of the entire body, it promotes health, longevity, physical and psychological wellness. It often involves aesthetic and physical benefits: Usually you get an increase in lean body mass and a decrease in fat, the scaffold bone development and expansion of the rib cage, the improvement of movements and breathing coordination and reduction of spasticity.
The first evidence of an ancestor discipline of swimming is dated back to the prehistoric period. In the Cave of Swimmers, on the plateau of Gilf Kebir, cave paintings were found where men performed movements similar to those of the current swimming styles. Among the hypotheses taken into consideration, however, there is also the one that represented men performing movements of a ritual that is unconnected to the swimming activity we mean nowadays .
An Egyptian clay seal dated between 4000 BC and 9000 BC shows four swimmers during something which is believed to be a variant of the crawl.
Competitive swimming in Europe started around 1800, mostly with Backstroke. The German Guts Muths organized in 1833 the first swimming races and diving. The crawl was introduced in 1873 by John Arthur Trudgen, who copied the style of the Amerindians. Swimming was already in the program of the first modern Olympics, the Athens 1896. In 1902, the crawl was improved by Richard Cavill.
In 1908, it was founded the Fédération Internationale de Natation Amateur (FINA).
