Montenegro is a European Country located in the Balkan Peninsula and it faces the Adriatic Sea, bordered by Serbia, Kosovo, Albania, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Up to June 2nd 2006, the Republic of Montenegro was united to the Republic of Serbia under the name of Serbia and Montenegro. From June 3rd 2006, Montenegro became an Independent State, proclaimed following the referendum on independence on May 21st 2006. Is now a member of the ONU since 2006 and in December 2015 has received a an official invitation to join NATO in order to become the 29th member. October 22nd 2007 was officially proclaimed the new Constitution.
Counts 672,180 inhabitants and an area of 13,812 km², the population density is 48 km². The capital is Podgorica.
The narrow coastline of Montenegro overlooking the Adriatic and turning his back to the Balkans. Inside the country, ancient city walls, Catholic and Orthodox churches and the mix of Montenegrin culture, Serbian, Bosnian, Albanian and Croatian survived the events of history.
Montenegro owns UNESCO world Heritage sites: Durmitor and the Tara River Canyon, the old town of Kotor and Boka. However, these sites are not currently included in the World Heritage List because Montenegro has yet occur to retify the UNESCO World Heritage Convention.
Being a very young state, Montenegro is still in a standstill for the creation of national sports leagues and national teams. There are however the conditions to improve in very popular disciplines in the near Serbia as basketball, handball, water polo and volleyball, sports in which, before Yugoslavia, and then Serbia and Montenegro, have excelled in Europe and the world.
In 2011 Montenegro for the first time participated in the Games of the Small States of Europe, where conquering 4 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals.
Montenegro is preparing to host the 18th edition of the Games in 2019.
