Cycling is the sport in which the bike is used and it is controlled by the International Cycling Union (UCI).
As regards the classic sport cycling, historically exist three main specialties: the track cycling, road cycling and cyclocross. From the eighties it has had much diffusion even off-road cycling, mountain biking. Then there are also the BMX competitions, those of trials, those of indoor cycling (divided into artistic cycling and cycle ball) and those of para-cycling. These eight disciplines are those recognized by the UCI.
Road cycling is probably the most widespread, practiced and followed cycling discipline. The races, which usually take place from February to October, are divided into two types: one-day races and stage races.
Among the most famous races of one-day, called “classical”, are the Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Liege-Bastogne-Liege and the Tour of Lombardy. Even the world championships are added in the calendar, which are held annually, and the Summer Olympic Games, every four years.
In recent years the discipline of mountain biking has spread, played with special bicycles, mountain bikes on off-road paths.
There are several specialties, characterized by different organization of the competitions, a different path, transport and equipment. The main ones are the cross country, the marathon (or granfondo), downhill, dual slalom, the four-cross and cross country eliminator.
The most important races are also in this case the world championships of all the specialties above, the trials of the World Cup, continental championships and solely for cross country, proof of the Olympic Games specialties.
