The track and field is a set of sports that can be broadly divided into: track racing, competitions (jumps, leaps and jumps in elevation), multiple trials, road racing, gear, cross-country and mountain running.
The word derives etymologically from athletic Athleta which in turn comes from the greek Athletes from Athlos ‘fight’.
The athletic events are usually organized around a circular track of the length of 400 m, on which are held running competitions. Racing wheel spins and jumps instead, take place on the field enclosed by the track.
The Athletics has its origins in ancient Greece: the Homeric poems, the statuary, Pindar and vase painting testify to the deep passion for sport and the honor of the ancient Greeks held where athletes.
The twenty-third Lyric of the Iliad describes tests that anticipate events that are still typical modern in athletics: a race on foot and two launch tests, the disc and the javelin. But the Odyssey in the song dedicated to the games of the Phoenicians, Homer, as if to complete the range of basic natural activities (running, jumping, throwing) also speaks of a jump test ( “the greatest leap Anfiolo spiccollo”) without specifying the which leap it was, although it is not unreasonable to suppose that it was long jump.
The Athletics was included in the Olympic Games since the first edition in 1896, and since then has always been part of the Olympic program.
The body of international athletics Government, the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF), was established in 1912. The IAAF organizes the World Championships in Athletics, held every two years: the first edition took place in 1983 in Helsinki.
