Andorra, officially Principality of Andorra is a sovereign landlocked micro state in southwestern Europe located on the eastern Pyrenees, in between France and Spain. It is the sixth smallest nation in Europe with a surface of 468 km2 and an estimated population of approximately 85 458 occupants.
It is a principality founded back in 1278 and is a parliamentary headed by two co-princes, the President of France and the Roman Catholic Bishop of Urgell as Co-Princes. The jobs are formals, as both of the co-princes delegate their own powers (mainly veto) to their Andorrans representatives. It is the prime minister that exercices the power for Andorra, together with the government. Since 1993, the principality is a member of the United Nations and to the European Council. The only official language is Catalan, although Spanish, Portuguese, and French are also commonly spoken. TERRITORY:
Andorra consists of seven parishes:
- Andorra la Vella – Canillo – Encamp – Escaldes-Engordany – La Massena
- Ordino – Sant Julià de Lòria
Due to its location in the Easter Pyrenees mountain rage, Andorra consists predominantly of rugged mountains, with an average elevation of 1,996 metres s.l.m, the highest being Coma Pedrosa at 2,942 metres. These are separated by three narrow valleys in a Y shape that combine into one as the main stream, the Gran Valira river, leaves the country for for Spain. In addition this
small country located in between France and Spain offers the best skiing resorts. Once the snow melts, we discover numerous footpaths, that goes from simple walks to hard excursions days, in order to reach the highest peaks and the most beautiful places of the Principality.
Andorra, twice hosted the Games of the Small States of Europe in 1991 and in 2005 and participated to all 16 editions, accomplishing a total of 219 medals, in which 38 golds, 79 silvers, and 102 bronzes, managing to reach the 8th place on the chart.
